Happy Halloween!
In today's class we went into more detail about using powerpoint. We learned different ways to use powerpoint effectively and in which instances to use the techniques we learned.
Like any other situation in the world there are possibilities of problems with powerpoint. The main problem that we talked about was how to save a powerpoint presentation so that all the original features were incorporated. This is often a problem because different versions of powerpoint support different features. If you save a presentation on the version you are using and try to open it up somewhere else, the version of powerpoint might not be the same. This would lead to your presentation not functioning properly. There are a few ways to solve this problem.
*Try to check if your presentation works on the computer you will be using for the presentation beforehand, if possible.
-Save your file as an older version of powerpoint (2000)
-Use the pack and go feature that saves all the aspects of your presentation
If you will not be there to present the presentation you have put together. There are two ways to go about making this a good experience for your audience.
-Saving the powerpoint as a show (This means that the powerpoint will run all on it's own as an automatic slideshow once opened)
-Create an interactive powerpoint presentation (To do this you put in simple navigation features to allow the viewer to go through the presentation themselves. This works well for storyline based and instructional presenations.)

Would you like some ketchup with your fries?
I chose to do the Heinz company for my project. I love ketchup and the most popular brand of ketchup is Heinz! Everybody's heard of it but not everyone really knows much about its back ground and history. That's why I chose to do my project about it.
I had a successful presentation and I'm really proud of my work! I shared a lot of things I learned with the people I presented to, so I'm going to share some information with all those who are reading this.
Most of the information about Heinz can be found on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HJ_Heinz (I used this as my source for a lot of the things I presented) The thing I foun dmost interesting was the Heinz slogan "57 varieties". Here are some interesting facts about it.
- The slogan was chosen due to H.J. Heinz being inspired by an advertisement for 21 different varieties of shoes.
- Some dogs are referred to as Heinz if they are of mixed-breed
- Heinz sponsored car # 57 in a NASCAR race in the early 1990's.
- If you tap the 57 varieties label on the neck of a Heinz ketchup bottle, the ketchup will magically pour out.
I also enjoyed the other presentations I watched. I learned a lot from all the presentations but here are a few things I didn't know and found interesting.
- Adidas started out making shoes completely built of scrap parts.
- Kool-Aid was originally called "FruitSmack".
- The Ice Cream brand of shoes calls the different types of shoes "Flavours."
- Only white shoes used to be allowed in the NBA (Michael Jordan continuously broke this rule to promote Nike)
- A company called Bungie started developing Halo, its' release was delayed when Bungie became part of Microsoft.
I picked up something from all the presentations and walked out a more knowledgable person!

Branded
We've been given a new assignment. It requires us to choose a brand and prepare a powerpoint presentation on it. Sounds simple enough, but we have to make it so that the slides are supporting our presentation and not being the presenter of the infromation. A lot of other things have to be taken into account now that we know what to avoid to have a successful presentation.

Japanophilia
Another article I looked at was Amazing Anime.I'm a pretty big anime and manga fan and this article interested me a lot since it informs people who don't know about it. The article discusses how Anime came to be so popular and what it is. Below is a summary of the article.
No matter who you are or where you come from and if you've been exposed to media, you've come across Anime or Manga at some point in your life. Think about it...haven't you seen the characters with eyes like saucers and hair that never ceases to stick up? That's Anime and Manga, a defined style of Japanese Art and Animation.
So what makes Anime and Manga so popular and so much more attracting than western animation? The answer that the article provides can be summed up in just a few sentences. Anime and Manga is more open-minded, you can think of any scenario and it probably has been or will be made into an Anime or Manga. Western animation can easily be narrowed down to one thing...Disney. Disney is usually based on a very simple idea "Good Vs. Evil" This idea has become so common that it doesn't really do much for an audience anymore. Anime and Manga take that idea and all sorts of other concepts to a whole new level. This is why the audience that consumes Anime and Manga has no age group, or gender division. Everyone can find something that they'll like.
So of course you can tell that people out of Japan and Asia wouldn't want to miss out. Aside from the consumers a lot of western companies are putting in an effort to bring Anime and Manga to North America. The biggest form of this is in the form of Films. Hayao Miyazaki is one of the renowned Anime film creators and Disney teamed up with his "Studio Ghibli" to release his films "My Neighbour Totoro" and "Kiki's Delivery Service" on video.
The article focuses a lot on Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke". It was the highest-grossing film in Japanese history in 1997. The Titanic topped it later. This film did very well in both USA and in Japan. There were only two problems that were seen in the film, the violence and the length of 2 hours and 13 minutes. These however didn't prove to be major obstacles for the film when it came out in USA along with a Pokemon craze that swept North America in 1999.
The article being written in 1999 states that Anime might never reach the point of ever being as overwhelmingly popular in USA as it is in Japan and mentions that it's still started of pretty well with the current happenings. But as you can see a lot has changed in the past 7 years and Anime is widely supported in all of North America.

Prevent Business-related Suicide
A very common and major cause of perspiration has proven to be presentations...Presentations seem to be something that people tend to get very nervous about. No matter who the audience and what the subject matter may be, people always get stressed out when they have to get up and talk to a lot of people.
To take away some of the pressure from themselves people choose to use tools to help them with their presentation and one of the very common ones has become "PowerPoint." A program designed to assist people with their presentations, but it can be the cause of your doom if not used effectively. This point and ways to avoid misusing PowerPoint have been discussed in "Stop Death by Powerpoint" By "Christian W Buss." I will be using this article as a base for the following summary.
A presentation is only successful if the audience makes it so. If the audience engages in discussion about the topic presented, this is a signal that the presentation served it's purpose. If the audience talks about other aspects of the presentation, such as the speaker and his/her gestures etc. it means that the point was not made properly. The only worse thing that can happen is that the audience does not show any reaction to the presentation whatsoever.
The article suggested 5 ways to avoid making a bad presentation and they are stated below:
1) PowerPoint leads to boredom
Most slides that make up a presentation consist of a title and points that follow below. The human mind is very used to this structure and will quickly get bored of it. The best way to tackle this obstacle is to break the monotony and keep the audience interested. According to the article you can do this by displaying supporting details on one slide and conclusions on the next. Switching between presenters is also a good idea.
2) Textbooks and reports are not the way to go.
This is because the audience can already read much faster than a presenter can present and so they draw in much more information when they read the same text, rather than if a presenter uses it as a presentation. The best way to go about using material is to use your presentation as a guide for the material in the written report.
3) What you already know is of no use.
Most of the time a presenter will talk endlessly about one slide, stating every little thing that they know. This of course would bore any person watching the presenter, a good idea is to move at a fairly quick pace through your presentation to maintain a good level of audience interest.
4) Don't read of your slide
Your slides should be used to add to your presentation and to shape your idea. If they are the same as what you are saying the audience can't draw much from the presentation. Your slides should lead into the next slide and support what you present along with them and before them.
5) Interact with your audience
Talking with your audience is key to a good presentation. You should engage in conversation with your audience even before your presentation starts, they may point out things that you'd like to mention in your presentation. Using a question and answer session between an audience member and yourself is also an effective technique to get your information to the audience. To use this well, you may want to ask a friend to sit in the audience and ask questions about points you'd like to discuss.
These are 5 things that the article recommends and will surely do wonders for your next presentation.

Mission Accomplished
Today is the day our project is due! I've finished it and put my best effort forth, I hope I've done a good job. Well anyway there are a few more things that I picked up while I was finishing my assignment.
The Difference Between Intel Pentium D and Intel Dual Core Processors:
Intel Dual Core and Intel Pentium D processors are not the same thing, in the past I mistook them to both be the same thing. I previously thought that both of these processors came in two's. The truth however was a bit of a shock.
An Intel Pentium D Processor is one processor with two execution cores. The processor has HT (Hyper-Threading) Technology. This works by duplicating some sections of the processor while leaving the original processor alone. This makes the performance of the PC much faster and organizes the infromation in a better way.
The term Intel Dual Core refers to two processors being part of one system. In this case there are actually two processors on the Motherboard operating at the same time. This makes multi-tasking even easier! The data is sent spread out between the two processors, taking some of the load of both of them. This makes the system much faster than just having one processor.
This is one of the thigns that really surprised me when I learned about it, and I think everybody else ought to know to! Well that's all, I've handed in my assignment and now I'm just hoping for the best.

Terms for the aspiring Computer Consultant
I've been working on my assignment this whole week and it is quite a lot of work but it's very interesting as well. I've learned a few things during the process of doing this project and they are as follows:
-Rebate: An amount of money that you pay with the original purchase and then reclaim it later on through a process such as mail and rebate.
-Firewire: A type of port that enables you to connect any type of media device, like a camcorder, into your computer.
-Off Lease: This term means that a product has been leased and then returned. It has gone through maintenance and put up for sale again, very similar to the term Refurbished.
Well I've got lots of work to do so that's all for now.

Hired!
Imagine being a Computer Consultant as a high school student, it may sound very hard to grasp but that's what we've been asked to do! We've been assigned a project in which we must chooose 3 computers for each client (Can be found on www.g9computes.blogspot.com) . Another option is to build our own computers using barebone kits. It's up to us where we go from there.
The second part is preparing a written presentation that will convince the buyer that we're the most reliable source to buy a computer from. Explaining why each feature of the computer we've chosen is a key part of this assignment.
So far I've made a fair amount of progress and just have a few things to lay out before I can go to actually explaining why the systems I've chosen are beneficial to the client I recommend them to.
